If Andrew Bogut is selected by the Bucks with the top pick (like we’re all expecting), then the logical choice for the Hawks would be Chris Paul. We’re in desperate need of a point guard and he’s considered the best available. Though, Billy Knight has never drafted logically. He’s more of a best player, best talent available-type GM. That’s why some speculate Marvin Williams could be our choice.
Williams is touted as the most talented player with the highest upside in this draft; a rare combination of size, athleticism, and versatility. So why would the Hawks hesitate to take such a prospect? Because we have five players who fit that same description. Josh Smith, Al Harrington, Josh Childress, Boris Diaw, and Donta Smith are all uber-talented, athletic, and versatile. If we draft Marvin, our roster will be loaded with incredible talent, but no defined position players.
Of course, we might not even have to worry about taking Williams. Apparently, Bernie Bickerstaff, the GM and coach of the Charlotte Bobcats, has already contacted Billy Knight about a draft-day trade. In my previous article, I spoke about a potential deal between the Cats and Hawks that would send the number two pick to Charlotte in exchange for the number five and thirteen picks. And wouldn’t you know that’s the exact deal they’re discussing (maybe I’m psychic).
I’d like to reiterate my fondness of this trade. We have gaping holes at point guard and center. With two lottery picks, we’d be able to fill these holes with talented players who’ll be able to step in and contribute right away. It’s a virtual lock Deron Williams or Raymond Felton will be available at the fifth spot. I like both, but if I were forced to choose, I’d go with Deron Williams. He’s a pass-first point guard with a fantastic stroke from beyond the arc. Though, if Deron were snatched up by New Orleans with the fourth choice, I wouldn’t think twice about taking Raymond Felton. He’s the quickest point guard in this draft and has amazing court vision.
With the thirteenth pick, I’d select the best big man available. Chances are good someone like Johan Petro, Tiago Splitter, or Chris Taft will be available at that spot. Since we’re probably going to sign a power forward and/or center in free agency, we can afford to select a young big and allow them to develop for a couple of years.
There is a scenario that could make all this trade talk mute, and that’s if the Bucks decide to take Marvin Williams with the number one pick. It would surprise many, including myself, if that were to occur but it’s certainly possible. Let’s remember, we all thought Emeka Okafor was a lock to go number one last year, but Dwight Howard shocked us all. If the Bucks stay true to the ‘ol adage of best player available, then Marvin could cause a draft-day upset and go number one. If this happens, then the Hawks will happily take Bogut second. No trades, no talk of Chris Paul, Bogut would be our guy.
I would like to emphasize the fact that anything can happen between now and draft day. Workouts haven’t even begun yet for the top players(i.e. Bogut, Williams. Paul, etc.). Injuries and bad workouts could completely alter the draft rankings. Remember, at this time last year Josh Smith, Jameer Nelson, and Pavel Podkolzin were all projected to be lottery picks. Goes to show what a month can do. I guess that’s what’s so enjoyable about this time. The possibilities are endless. Basketball fans, RealGM addicts, and especially Hawks fans should enjoy it while it lasts. |
