A rumor making its way through the NBA grapevine is a possible trade sending Michael Doleac to the Hawks. Apparently, Miami is content with Alonzo Mourning holding down the primary backup center position and Earl Barron getting third string duty. This leaves Doleac as the odd man out. There are variations on the rumored deal. One has the Hawks taking Doleac’s contract (9 million over the next 3 years) in exchange for a second round pick. Another has us dealing away a non-essential player like Tony Delk or Donta Smith for the big man. With the tragic loss of Jason Collier, the Hawks could use some help on the frontline. Doleac has proven to be a solid backup center throughout the majority of his career and his perimeter scoring ability would provide a nice contrast to our bangers—Zaza Pachulia, John Edwards, and Esteban Bautista. On the other hand, there’s really no point for a rebuilding team like Atlanta to absorb a 3-year contract for a player who won’t make much of a difference in the win column. Doleac is a role player, plain and simple. We might be better off just signing a big man for the minimum (someone call Kevin Willis). If we do wind up acquiring Doleac, I won’t be upset but I won’t be jumping for joy either. It’d be a move that wouldn’t help or hurt our team tremendously.
