| Lottery Summit: Atlanta Hawks Authored by Andrew Perna & The RGM Hawks Forum - June 15, 2008 - 2:29 pm

| Current Featured Columns | | Merry Christmas, Raptors Fans The Raptors might not be playing good basketball right now, but there are plenty of things for Toronto fans to be thankful for this holiday season. A Melo Behind The SuperstarsCarmelo Anthony has never been one of the league's most efficient offensive players.

Last month I posted a series of Lottery Summits for each of the league’s fourteen non-playoff teams. I posed a set of questions, almost exactly the same as the ones asked in the first series of Pre-Draft Summits, to each of the NBA’s playoff team forums as we continue our up-to-the-minute, expert 2008 Draft coverage. The following responses were compiled from our Atlanta forum, the people who know the Hawks better than some of the players themselves.
The Atlanta Hawks:
2007-08 Record: 37-45
Difference From 2006-07: Seven More Wins
Playoff Result: Lost In Seven To Boston (First Round)
Restricted Free Agents: Josh Childress, Jeremy Richardson, Josh Smith, Salim Stoudemire, Mario West
Unrestricted Free Agents: None
The Verdicts
1. What could the team have done differently to advance in the playoffs?
conleyorbust: If we had pushed the pace in Boston instead of relying on jumpers, we might have had a better chance to advance.
JoshB914: I don't think anything would have helped. There was no way that this team was winning in Boston. If Mike Bibby had been on, the games may have been closer in retrospect.
evildallas: If we had finished regular season with a better record to gain a more favorable first round match up.
2. Where were the team’s biggest strengths?
conleyorbust: Athleticism, that’s it.
JoshB914: Like conleyorbust said, we are athletic. We were able to win a lot games purely on being able to out-run and out-jump teams.
evildallas: Joe Johnson and Josh Smith. Our point guard play was inconsistent, small forward was weak defensively and really cooled on offensive efficiency after hot start and center was solid, but not really an advantage for us yet.
3. Who had a surprisingly effective season?
conleyorbust: Al Horford. He did everything we asked of him and had a great attitude about it as well.
JoshB914: Horford was better than I thought he would be.
evildallas: Horford was more effective than anyone could have been expected. Josh Childress had a stronger season than expected as well.
4. Who had a surprisingly ineffective season?
conleyorbust: Marvin Williams, Zaza Pachulia and Bibby.
JoshB914: Zaza and Marvin, who both killed us at times.
evildallas: Pachulia regressed horribly and expectations were higher for Acie Law.
5. How confident are you in the front office heading into the offseason?
Author’s Note: Answers compiled prior to the Rick Sund hire.
conleyorbust: Is that a joke?
JoshB914: Haha, very funny.
evildallas: Not very.
6. What are the team’s biggest needs in the draft?
conleyorbust: We don’t have a pick, but we need a backup big man, a couple proven shooters and maybe a new point guard.
JoshB914: We need a tough guy, but we don't have a pick right now.
evildallas: A pick or two would be nice. If we did acquire one our needs would be size, outside shooting, bulk and quality depth at every position.
7. Who would you like your team to select?
conleyorbust: No pick, but I’d love to get Jose Calderon in a sign-and-trade.
JoshB914: Not applicable.
evildallas: If we could land an early second rounder I would love Bill Walker, because I think he is going to explode as a value pick. Joey Dorsey is my second round candidate for instant impact power forward. If we land a mid-first pick, I am interested in Robin Lopez's potential as a shot blocker/rebounder.
